The Terra Brasilis Institute promoted a meet-up to motivate the adoption of best management practices on the rural properties in the Serra da Canastra region

One of the most traditional products of Minas Gerais, the Canastra cheese is of great importance to the economy in the Serra da Canastra region. To stimulate the environmentally sustainable production of this cheese, not only does it add to the product value, but also contributes for the conservation of natural resources. With that in mind, the Pato Aqui, Água Acolá project, led by the Terra Brasilis Institute and sponsored by Petrobras through the Petrobras Socioambiental Program, promoted the environmental sustainability of a rural property that produces cheese to become a replicable model, according to the current environmental regulations.

In order to spread and publicize the practices that have been developed, the Terra Brasilis Institute promoted, on August 28th, a visit by rural producers from the Serra da Canastra region to the model property. The actions of environmental sustainability on the property were developed in partnership with the owner of the farm, Mr. Jaime Costa. "Mr. Jaime has a key role in this project, embracing the idea and investing in the adoption of best practices", highlights Lívia Lins, coordinator of the Pato Aqui, Água Acolá project.

During the visit, the producers learned the actions of environmental sustainability, which were developed on the property, such as the installation of  biodigester, septic tank, reservoir for the retention of rainwater, the fencing in of springs and riparian areas and the planting native tree species in the pasture.

According to Lívia Lins, the visit was very productive to spread and publicize the economic and environmental gains in the improvements developed on the model property. "The producers were very interested in adopting the actions which were developed, especially the installation of the biodigester, which produces energy and fertilizer from cattle manure", she assesses.
